You don’t have to help the world. You have to help yourself is what sustainable living is all about.
Well, most often than not, people get confused when it comes to sustainable living. They think that it takes a lot of effort and money to move sustainable. This thought is just a myth.
Here, we look at some baby steps that you can take towards living more sustainably.
Turn off the switches
When you move from one room to another, make sure that you turn off the electric appliances in the room. Energy conservation can help reduce your carbon footprint.
Also, it would be easy on your electricity bills.
Switch to renewables
Want to move beyond turning off? Switching to renewables means 100% carbon-free. You can slowly move towards renewables, starting with a few items before going all out.
Use LED light bulbs
They last longer. They use less energy. They are efficient. They are available in a range of brightness and designs.
Everyone is a winner with an LED.
Stop food wastage
India wastes Rs. 244 crores worth of food a day. To top it, 194 million Indians go hungry every day. Looking at these inequalities, it is such a crime. Also, think about the amount of CO2 that gets generated in the landfills.
Compost your food
Assuming that you have let your food go waste, don’t put them in the bin; instead, compost it. It would act as a fertilizer and keep your garden green.
You don’t have to send them to the landfill, preventing the build-up of methane gas.
Recycle. Recycle. Recycle.
Before you throw anything out, take a moment, and figure out if it can be recycled. Everything in this world can be recycled – batteries to clothes to papers to electronic items to cars.
Avoid bottled water
Stop buying bottled water for a simple reason that you have to crush the bottle in which it is packed. This adds to the plastic pollution.
Insulate your home
Insulation makes your home temperature controlled. You don’t have to spend much energy in cooling or warming up your home.
Fix it
Fix everything, be it your pair of shoes, phones, furniture or electronic equipment. Replacing them is easier many times, but it adds to the global wastage. In case you can’t fix it, try turning it into something useful.
Don’t drive
Do not drive unless it is essential. Use a bicycle, walk, or carpool to run your errands.
Buy local
Reduce your carbon footprint due to transportation when you buy local. Also, it helps the local economy thrive and shield the country against economic slowdown and recession.
Grow your own
Grow your vegetables – reduce your carbon, save on money, and get some physical activity
All of these are easily implementable for every individual, which would make a massive difference to how we live and what we leave behind for the next generation.
